Every year students ask me the same question: which certification should I do? The honest answer is that the best IT certification for 2027 depends on the job you want next, not on which badge is trending. This guide maps the most respected certifications to clear career paths, using costs and exam details taken directly from each vendor’s official page, and adds practical advice for students and professionals in Nepal.

How to choose the right certification

Before you pay for any exam, answer three questions:

  1. Which role do you want in the next 12–18 months? IT support, networking, security, cloud, data, AI or project coordination each have different entry points.
  2. What do employers near you ask for? Read 20 job ads for that role, in Nepal and on remote job boards, and note which certifications appear most often.
  3. Can you build proof alongside it? A certification plus a lab project beats two certifications with nothing to show.

IT support and networking

CompTIA A+ is the classic first step for help desk and IT support roles. You need to pass two exams, Core 1 and Core 2, from the same version. The current V15 series launched on March 25, 2025, has a maximum of 90 questions in 90 minutes per exam, and CompTIA estimates its retirement around 2028, so it is a safe choice for 2027 (CompTIA A+).

IT certification badges for cloud, security, networking and data arranged along a career path

Cisco CCNA (exam 200-301) covers network fundamentals, IP connectivity, security fundamentals and automation. It costs 300 USD, lasts 120 minutes, has no prerequisites and is valid for three years. Cisco notes that subnetting and the command line are the hardest parts for beginners and that you cannot pass by reading alone, so plan lab time in Cisco Packet Tracer (Cisco CCNA).

Cybersecurity

ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) is designed for people with no work experience. It covers security principles, governance, identity and access management, networking and cloud security, and security operations. It is a good way to see whether security suits you before committing to a harder exam (ISC2 CC).

CompTIA Security+ is one of the most requested security certifications in job ads. Timing matters for 2027: CompTIA says Security+ V8 is expected to launch on or around November 17, 2026, with expanded coverage of AI-related risks, security operations and modern environments (CompTIA Security+). If you are starting now for a 2027 exam, make sure your study material matches V8.

Security starts with habits. My guide to cyber hygiene in Nepal covers the basics every IT learner should practise.

Cloud computing

Cloud skills remain among the most transferable in IT.

  • AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner: 90 minutes, 65 questions, 100 USD, valid for three years. AWS says it suits people with no IT background, including sales, marketing and project roles. Passing one AWS exam also gives you a 50% discount on another (AWS).
  • Microsoft Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900): a 45-minute exam on cloud concepts, Azure architecture and services, and management and governance. Microsoft prices it by the country where you take it, which can make it cheaper outside the US (Microsoft Learn).
  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate: 130 minutes, 65 questions, 150 USD. AWS recommends about a year of hands-on experience and suggests people with no IT experience start with Cloud Practitioner first (AWS).

AI and data

AWS Certified AI Practitioner validates foundational knowledge of AI, machine learning and generative AI on AWS. It costs 100 USD, has 65 questions in 90 minutes and is aimed at anyone exploring AI, including line-of-business roles (AWS). If you work alongside AI tools rather than building them, this is a sensible 2027 addition.

Google Data Analytics Certificate teaches spreadsheets, SQL, Tableau, Python and AI-assisted analysis through eight courses on Coursera, about 240 hours in total. Google lists the US price as 49 USD a month and says it may be lower in other countries; check the Coursera page for the price in Nepal (Google). For a wider view of this path, read my non-coding data analytics career guide.

Project management

PMI CAPM suits graduates moving into project coordination. The exam has 150 questions in 180 minutes and covers project management fundamentals, predictive and agile methods, and business analysis. You need a secondary-school qualification and 23 hours of project management education before the exam, and you maintain it with 15 professional development units every three years (PMI).

DevOps and platform engineering

Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) is a hands-on, performance-based exam: two hours solving real tasks on a Kubernetes command line. The exam-only price is 445 USD, and the current exam is based on Kubernetes v1.35 (Linux Foundation). It is not a first certification, but it is highly valued once you have Linux and cloud basics.

Suggested paths for 2027

  • BIT, BCA or CSIT students: A+ or CCNA, then a cloud fundamentals exam, then one associate-level certification in your chosen track.
  • Aspiring security professionals: ISC2 CC, then Security+ (V8), with a home lab to practise.
  • BBA, MBA and non-IT professionals: AWS Cloud Practitioner or AZ-900, plus AWS AI Practitioner or the Google Data Analytics Certificate. My MBA digital marketing guide shows how this fits management roles.
  • Working IT professionals: move from associate to specialist exams such as AWS Solutions Architect or CKA.

Certification paths by track: IT support from CompTIA A+ to Cisco CCNA; cybersecurity from ISC2 CC to Security+ V8; cloud from AWS Cloud Practitioner or AZ-900 to AWS Solutions Architect Associate to CKA; AI and data from AWS AI Practitioner to Google Data Analytics; project management with PMI CAPM

Diagram: start on the left of each track and move right as you gain hands-on experience. Check each vendor’s official page for current exam details.

Taking exams from Nepal

  • Payment: most exams are priced in US dollars. You will need a card that can make international USD payments; check the limits with your bank before booking.
  • Delivery: AWS, Microsoft, Cisco and PMI exams are delivered through Pearson VUE, at a test centre or online with a remote proctor. Check Pearson VUE for current test-centre options in Nepal.
  • Online exams: you need a stable connection, a working webcam, a private room and backup power. A dropped connection can end your attempt.
  • Discounts: look for student pricing (Microsoft offers scheduling through Certiport for students and educators), vendor training events and the AWS 50% follow-on discount.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Collecting badges without skills. Interviewers will ask you to explain and demonstrate.
  • Using exam dumps. They breach vendor exam rules, can cost you the certification and leave you unable to do the job.
  • Studying the wrong version. Always match your materials to the exam version you will sit.
  • Ignoring renewal. Most of these certifications are valid for three years and need recertification or continuing education.

Build proof alongside your certification

For every certification, produce one piece of evidence: a Packet Tracer network diagram for CCNA, a small AWS project with an architecture diagram, a Kaggle notebook for data analytics or a home-lab write-up for security. Put it on GitHub or a simple portfolio page. That proof, more than the badge, is what gets you shortlisted.
