Week 6: Email Marketing, Automation & Retention
Acquiring a lead through SEO or Paid Ads is only the first step. Email Marketing is how you nurture that lead into a paying customer and retain them over time. It remains one of the highest ROI channels in digital marketing.

1. Pre-Work: The Psychology of Email
When a user gives you their email address on your sandbox website, they are giving you permission to enter their personal space (their inbox). You must treat this with respect.
List Segmentation & Deliverability (Manager’s View)
Not all leads are the same. Segmentation is the practice of dividing your email list into smaller groups based on specific criteria (e.g., demographics, past purchases, or how they found your site). Sending targeted emails to segmented lists dramatically improves open and click rates.
As a manager, you must also oversee Deliverability (getting into the inbox, not the spam folder). Ensure your technical team configures three standard authentication records for your domain:
- SPF (Sender Policy Framework): Verifies which IP addresses can send emails on your behalf.
- DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail): Adds a cryptographic signature to your emails.
- DMARC: Tells receiving servers what to do if an email fails SPF or DKIM checks. Without these, your automated sequences will go straight to spam.
Automation Logic
Automation allows you to send the right message, to the right person, at the right time, without manual intervention.

Legal Compliance
Before sending commercial email, cover consent basics. For this module:
- Always get explicit opt-in; never buy lists.
- Include a clear unsubscribe and a real business identity (name, location).
- Know that GDPR (EU) and CAN-SPAM (US) are the common international baselines—and that Nepal’s Electronic Transactions Act plus emerging privacy expectations still require honest consent and no deceptive subject lines.
- Prefer double opt-in when using Mailchimp or similar tools.
WhatsApp + email (Nepal)
Many leads prefer WhatsApp for booking. Keep email for nurture and receipts; offer WhatsApp as an alternate CTA in Email 3 (“Book on WhatsApp”). Do not spam personal WhatsApp numbers without consent.
Real-world proof (nurture)
In a published education content journey, lead-magnet subscribers converted to clients at 34% vs 12% for non-subscribers — nurture compounds owned audiences (content strategy case). Pair with the WhatsApp method brief when your CTA is chat, not a long form: WhatsApp funnel.
2. Lab Session: Building an Automated Sequence
Today, we will build the backend capture and nurture system for your sandbox.
Step 1: The Lead Capture Integration
If you haven’t already, integrate a live form into your Week 2 website. You can use Google Forms, Mailchimp, or your builder’s native form block. The goal is to successfully capture an email address and have it land in a database.
Step 2: The 3-Email Nurture Sequence
We will design a standard 3-part sequence designed to convert a cold lead into a warm prospect. You can reference the MBA DM Email Nurture Checklist for optimization tips.

- Email 1: Welcome & Value (Immediate)
- Goal: Deliver what they asked for (e.g., the eBook) and introduce your brand.
- Tone: Warm, helpful, not salesy.
- Email 2: Social Proof & Education (Day 2 or 3)
- Goal: Build trust.
- Content: Share a case study, a customer testimonial, or solve a common problem they have.
- Email 3: The Offer (Day 5 or 6)
- Goal: Conversion.
- Content: Present a clear, compelling offer (e.g., a discount code, a free consultation) with a strong Call to Action.
Step 3: Drafting Subject Lines
The subject line is the most important part of your email. If they don’t open it, the body copy doesn’t matter. Practice writing A/B variations for your subject lines.
Flow design checkpoint
A subscriber clicked your pricing link but did not buy. What should Email 3 (or a triggered follow-up) emphasize?
3. Deliverable
Use the MBA DM Deliverable Toolkit (Templates + Samples) before submitting.
Flowchart and full copy for a 3-step email nurture automation.
- Draw a simple flowchart (or use Mermaid.js) showing the logic of your sequence.
- Write the complete Subject Line and Body Copy for Email 1, Email 2, and Email 3.
Submit the document before the start of Week 7.
