Engagement rate shows how strongly people respond to your posts. It is more useful than follower count, but only if you calculate it the same way every time. This calculator gives you two versions: by followers and by reach.

Add up the numbers for one post or for a set of posts (for example, all posts last month) from Meta Business Suite, Instagram Insights, or TikTok analytics. The defaults are a hypothetical example. Everything runs in your browser.

Engagement rate calculator

Add up the numbers for one post or for a set of posts. The defaults are a hypothetical example.

The two formulas

  • Engagement rate by followers = (interactions ÷ number of posts) ÷ followers × 100. This gives the average per post.
  • Engagement rate by reach = total interactions ÷ total reach × 100.

Interactions here are reactions or likes, comments, shares, and saves. Some tools also count link clicks, profile visits, or video views, so their figures will differ. Pick one definition and keep it.

Hypothetical example: five posts earn 485 interactions in total, the page has 8,000 followers, and the posts reach 9,500 accounts. Engagement by followers is about 1.21% per post. Engagement by reach is about 5.11%. Each post reached about 24% of the follower count on average.

Which one should you report?

Use Better measure
Judging which posts and formats work By reach
Comparing your page with competitors By followers (follower counts are public; reach is not)
Monthly reporting to a client or boss Both, with the same definition each month
Evaluating an influencer By followers, then ask for reach screenshots

Engagement by followers falls as a page grows, because a smaller share of followers sees each post. That does not always mean the content got worse. Check reach too.

Ways to raise engagement

  • Ask a clear question or invite people to tag someone. Comments and shares usually show stronger interest than a quick reaction.
  • Make posts worth saving: price lists, how-to steps, checklists, and local guides.
  • Use Reels and short video to reach non-followers, then measure engagement by reach.
  • Reply to comments quickly. Conversations in the comments add interactions and signal activity.
  • Post in Nepali or mixed Nepali-English when your audience prefers it, and test both.
  • Avoid engagement bait such as “like if you agree”, which platforms may demote.

Engagement is not the goal

High engagement does not always mean sales. Track what happens next as well: messages, enquiries, website visits, and orders. Use the UTM builder for links, and treat engagement as an early signal, not the result.
