Content Refresh SOP (2026): Aging Content Audit, GSC Decay Signals & Update Checklist
Publishing new content gets attention — but refreshing aging content often delivers faster ROI. A page that ranked #4 eighteen months ago and drifted to #12 still has backlinks, index history, and URL authority. Updating it beats starting from zero.
This SOP defines how to identify decaying content, prioritize refreshes, and execute updates systematically.

When to refresh vs. publish new
| Signal | Action |
|---|---|
| Page ranks position 4–20, traffic declining | Refresh — update in place |
| Page ranks position 1–3, traffic stable | Monitor — minor updates only |
| Page never indexed or zero impressions | Evaluate — topic may lack demand; consider merge or delete |
| Topic evolved significantly (new product, regulation) | Refresh or new post + redirect old URL |
| Multiple thin pages on same topic | Merge into one comprehensive page |
| No existing page on high-demand topic | Publish new |
GSC decay signals
Pull these from Google Search Console Performance report (compare last 90 days vs. previous 90 days):
| Signal | Threshold | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Click decline | >25% drop with stable impressions | High |
| Position decline | Average position dropped >3 spots | High |
| CTR decline | Impressions up, clicks flat or down | Medium |
| Snippet loss | Was earning featured snippet, no longer | High |
| Query drift | Top queries changed — content mismatch | Medium |
| Competitor overtook | Manual SERP check shows fresher competitors | Medium |
Export workflow
- GSC → Performance → Pages tab → Last 16 months
- Export CSV — compare Q1 vs. Q2 (or use Date comparison)
- Flag pages with >25% click decline AND >100 monthly impressions
- Cross-reference with GA4 landing page report for on-site engagement drop
Content audit criteria
Score each aging page on five dimensions (1–5 scale):
| Dimension | Score 1 (low) | Score 5 (high) |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic value | <50 clicks/month | >500 clicks/month |
| Business relevance | Off-topic or deprecated service | Core revenue topic |
| Decay severity | Stable or growing | >30% click decline |
| Refresh effort | Needs full rewrite | Minor stat/link updates |
| Link equity | No backlinks | Multiple referring domains |
Priority score = Traffic value + Business relevance + Decay severity − Refresh effort + Link equity
Refresh pages scoring 15+ first. Pages scoring <8 — consider consolidation or noindex.
Content refresh SOP — step by step
Phase 1: Audit (Week 1)
- Export GSC Performance data (16 months, page-level)
- Export GA4 landing page report (sessions, engagement rate, conversions)
- Identify top 20 decaying pages by priority score
- Manual SERP check top 5 queries per page — note competitor changes
- Document current word count, publish date, internal links in/out
Phase 2: Research (Week 1–2)
- Re-verify search intent for top queries — intent may have shifted
- Identify content gaps vs. current top 3 ranking pages
- Collect updated stats, benchmarks, screenshots, tools
- Check internal links — are newer cluster posts linking to this page?
- Review FAQ section — add questions from “People Also Ask”
Phase 3: Update (Week 2–3)
- Update headline if SERP titles of competitors changed
- Rewrite introduction — answer the query in first 100 words
- Add 300–800 words of new substantive content (not fluff)
- Update all statistics, dates, and tool references to 2026
- Add 3–5 new internal links to related cluster posts

- Update internal links from hub/pillar pages pointing to refreshed content
Phase 5: Monitor (Week 4–8)

Content types and refresh tactics
| Content type | Refresh focus | Example |
|---|---|---|
| How-to guides | Update steps, screenshots, tool versions | “GA4 setup guide” — new UI screenshots |
| Benchmark posts | Replace all data tables with current year | “CPC benchmarks Nepal” — 2026 data |
| Glossary/dictionary | Expand definition, add Nepal examples | Add new related terms |
| List posts | Add/remove items, reorder by relevance | “Best SEO tools” — add new tools |
| Case studies | Add new results, update timeline | Append Q2 results to Q1 case study |
| Hub pages | Add links to new cluster posts | Monthly hub index update |
Topic cluster integration
Refreshes work best within a topic cluster framework:
- Pillar page — refresh annually with updated overview + links to all cluster posts
- Cluster posts — refresh individually based on decay signals
- Hub pages — update monthly with links to newest/refreshed content
- Internal linking — every refresh adds links to 3–5 sibling cluster posts
When refreshing, check if the page should be promoted from cluster to pillar (if it outperforms the current pillar) or merged into the pillar (if too thin).
Quarterly audit calendar
| Month | Action |
|---|---|
| January | Full content audit — export GSC, score all pages |
| April | Refresh top 10 priority pages from Q1 audit |
| July | Mid-year audit — check Q1 refresh results, identify new decay |
| October | Pre-Dashain refresh sprint — update seasonal/e-commerce content |
| Ongoing | Monthly — update hub pages, add internal links to new posts |
Metrics to track
