Group A (1 mark each)
- TPS: A Transaction Processing System records routine day-to-day business transactions (sales, payments, inventory movements) that feed higher-level systems.
- Business process: A set of related activities that transform inputs into outputs of value (e.g. order-to-cash).
- Strategic information system: An IS designed to support or shape strategy and help create sustainable competitive advantage.
- Knowledge management: Systematic capture, storage, sharing, and application of organizational knowledge (explicit and tacit).
- IoT: Internet of Things—network of physical objects with sensors/actuators that collect and exchange data over the internet.
- Social computing: Use of social media and Web 2.0 tools so people interact, create content, and collaborate for business or community goals.
- ERP: Enterprise Resource Planning—integrated software suite with a shared database supporting major cross-functional processes.
- CRM software: Helps acquire, retain, and serve customers by managing contacts, sales, marketing, and service in one customer view.
- Supply chain planning: Planning demand, supply, production, and distribution so the right goods move at the right time and cost.
- Predictive analytics: Using historical data and models to forecast likely future outcomes (e.g. churn, demand).
Group B (≈3 marks)
- IS and society: IS support e-government, education, healthcare records, digital payments, and social connection, while raising privacy, jobs, and digital-divide issues.
- BPI vs BPR: BPI improves existing processes incrementally (e.g. DMAIC). BPR redesigns processes radically from scratch for large performance jumps; higher risk and change cost.
- Big data vs databases: Traditional databases suit structured, well-modeled data. Big data tools handle volume, velocity, and variety (including unstructured data) when relational systems alone are insufficient.
- M-commerce benefits: Anytime/anywhere shopping and payments, location offers, push notifications; examples include mobile banking and wallet payments in Nepal.
- Web 2.0 uses: User-generated content, communities, crowdsourcing ideas, social listening, and collaborative tools (wikis, social networks) for marketing and internal collaboration.
- IS in SCM automation: EDI/APIs for orders, barcode/RFID tracking, warehouse systems, supplier portals, and dashboards that reduce delays and the bullwhip effect.
Group C (≈5 marks)
- IT impact on organizations: Raises efficiency and decision speed, enables new products/channels and remote work; also brings security risk, skills gaps, and change-management cost.
- IS for competitive advantage: Apply Porter’s forces/value chain—e.g. unique data, superior customer experience, tighter supplier links, or cost leadership via automation—so advantage is hard to copy quickly.
- Data warehouse vs data mart: A warehouse is an organization-wide repository of cleaned historical data for analysis. A data mart is a subject- or department-focused subset (e.g. marketing mart).
- Wireless technologies for business: Short-range (Bluetooth/NFC for payments and peripherals), Wi-Fi for campus/store WLANs, cellular (4G/5G) for field staff and m-commerce, plus satellite where terrestrial coverage is weak.
Group D (≈10 marks)
- ERP benefits + FAIS: ERP reduces silos, provides one source of truth, standardizes processes, and improves cross-functional visibility (finance, inventory, sales). FAIS examples: accounting/finance systems, HRIS, marketing/sales systems, production/operations systems—each strong inside a department but weak across departments until integrated (often via ERP).
- Managers, decisions, BA process: Managers face structured to unstructured decisions and move through intelligence → design → choice. The business analytics process typically covers business/data understanding, preparation, modeling, evaluation, and deployment—then presentation via reports/dashboards so decisions are evidence-based.
