The Evolution of the Web

To understand Web 2.0 and Web 3.0, we must first look at Web 1.0 (approx. 1989–2005). Web 1.0 was the “Read-Only Web.” It consisted primarily of static HTML pages where information was pushed to consumers. Users could read content but rarely interacted with it or created their own.

Web 2.0: The Social Web

Web 2.0 (approx. 2005–Present) is the “Read-Write Web.” It is characterized by the shift from static web pages to dynamic, user-generated content and the growth of social media.

Key Characteristics of Web 2.0

  • User-Generated Content: Users became creators through blogs, YouTube, and Wikipedia.
  • Social Connectivity: The rise of social networks (Facebook, Twitter) allowed people to interact and share.
  • Web Apps: Websites evolved into powerful applications (like Google Docs) accessible from anywhere.
  • Centralization: A major criticism of Web 2.0 is that a few large tech companies (Google, Meta, Amazon) control the platforms and user data.

Web 3.0: The Decentralized Web

Web 3.0 (Emerging) is often referred to as the “Read-Write-Own Web” or the “Semantic Web.” It aims to solve the centralization issues of Web 2.0 by returning control and data ownership to the users.

Key Characteristics of Web 3.0

  • Decentralization: Data is stored across multiple independent nodes (using blockchain technology) rather than on centralized corporate servers.
  • Semantic Web: AI and machine learning allow computers to understand the context and meaning of data, providing more intelligent search and personalization.
  • Token Economy: Cryptocurrencies and tokens allow users to own digital assets (NFTs) and earn rewards for participating in networks.
  • Trustless and Permissionless: Users can interact directly with each other without going through a trusted intermediary (like a bank or tech giant).
