Page Layout & Inserting Elements

PRC 110: Software Skills Practicum

Learning Objectives

  • Configure Page Setup (Margins, Orientation).
  • Use Breaks (Page vs. Section).
  • Insert Headers, Footers & Page Numbers.
  • Add Visual Elements (Images, Shapes, Charts).

Page Layout Setup

Found under the Layout tab.

Margins

  • Normal: 1 inch all sides.
  • Narrow: more text space.
  • Custom: Lab report left margin 1.25".

Orientation & Size

  • Portrait: Vertical (standard).
  • Landscape: Wide tables.
  • Size: A4 for PU submissions.

Check: Page Setup

Ask a student or group first — then click to check.

Page vs. Section Breaks

Breaks control where text ends and new pages start.

  • Page Break (`Ctrl + Enter`): Next page, same formatting.
  • Section Break (Next Page): New section — can change orientation/headers.
  • Continuous Break: Change columns mid-page.

Headers & Footers

  • Insert > Header/Footer: Course name, student name.
  • Page Numbers: e.g. Page X of Y.
  • Different First Page: Hide header/footer on the cover.

Inserting Visuals & Hyperlinks

Images & Charts

  • Pictures from This Device (sample).
  • Wrap Text; Insert Caption for lab reports.
  • SmartArt & Charts for visuals.

Hyperlinks

  • `Ctrl + K` → web, email, or place in document.
  • Use clear anchor text (not “click here”).
