THE HISTORY OF COMPUTING Introduction A computer is a machine that can be instructed to carry out sequences of arithmetic or logical operations automatically via computer programming. Modern computers have the ability to follow generalized sets of operations, called programs. These programs enable computers to perform an extremely wide range of tasks. Early Computing Devices The history of computers dates back to the invention of the abacus, which is believed to have been invented locally in China. The abacus was used for centuries before the adoption of the written modern numeral system. The First Computer Charles Babbage, an English mechanical engineer and polymath, originated the concept of a programmable computer. Considered the "father of the computer", he conceptualized and invented the first mechanical computer in the early 19th century. Modern Computers The principle of the modern computer was proposed by Alan Turing in his seminal 1936 paper. Turing proposed a simple device that he called "Universal Computing machine" and that is now known as a universal Turing machine. This machine could compute any anything that is computable by executing instructions stored on tape. Impact on Society Computers have changed the way we work, learn, communicate, and play. They have become an integral part of our daily lives, from smartphones (which are small computers) to the servers that run the internet.
